FDA-grade medical imaging with a 30-person team and a patent to show for it

Led by Ansuj Joshi as senior AI engineer at Larsen & Toubro Technology Services, Feb 2021 to Nov 2023

Situation

Chest X-ray and brain tumour classification and segmentation that had to meet FDA requirements and integrate with radiology systems.

What we built

Active learning and retraining workflows, production monitoring with drift detection and A/B testing, and the Chest-rAI reporting platform.

What changed

Annotation effort fell 25%, automated reporting went from minutes to seconds, and US Patent 12,451,236 was granted in 2025.

The problem

Regulated imaging models need an evidence trail: how the data was labelled, how the model was evaluated, how it is watched in production.

What we built

  • Active learning loops that pick the most useful images for radiologists to label next.
  • Production monitoring: confidence thresholds, drift detection, A/B testing.
  • Integration with radiology systems alongside clinical and data engineering stakeholders.

How it works

  • Models were evaluated to FDA requirements, and production monitoring watched confidence thresholds and drift against that baseline.
